PERSEO Biotechnology S.L. is a Spanish SME created in 2020 as a spin-off of the R&D Department of IMECAL, an engineering company of the metal sector. PERSEO is specialized in the process development and building up of the processes for the conversion of the organic fraction of wastes into added value products: biofuels, bioenergy and bioproducts, using the own patented process and technology know-how. PERSEO also offers technology collaboration services and upscaling of own or co-developed processes as well as complementary services to assess the feasibility and the scalability of the biotechnological processes. PERSEO process, which includes pre-treatment, enzymatic hydrolysis and fermentation stages, among others, has been optimized for different raw materials (lignocellulosic, agri-food, municipal wastes). The different organic biodegradable wastes can be converted into advanced bioethanol (a liquid biofuel or a raw material for the chemical industry) or into other added value bioproducts from the fermentation of sugars and in other products with high potential in the market (biosurfactants, biofertilizers or biomethane by anaerobic digestion). The main by-product produced during the fermentation of sugars into bioethanol is CO2, and the valorisation of this emitted gas is key for PERSEO to achieve a zero waste biorefinery concept.
